The NFU is republishing its business guide on fallen stock in light of the recent flooding events in Lancashire and Cumbria.

There are a number of disposal options for fallen stock, including rendering, incineration or sending carcasses to a knackers or hunt kennel. Annex 1 and 2 of the NFU’s business guide provide a list of addresses and approved processing plants.
An owner must contact a collector within 24 hours of the animal’s death to arrive delivery. Collection must be undertaken within 72 hours of the animal’s death.
On-farm incineration of carcasses must only be undertaken on plants approved by the local APHA.
The Animal By-Products Regulation prohibits the burning or open burial of fallen stock.
