Discussions have centred on the need for all retailers to make British dairy produce more widely available to consumers, and to make this clearer on shelf.
Changes to the labelling of dairy products was a key recommendation in the EFRA report this week and retailers could make a difference to this without any changes to legislation, by simply changing their on-shelf practices and ending the co-mingling or products of different origins.
Morrisons have agreed to check and re-evaluate the origin of their own-label dairy products.
NFU Dairy Board Chairman, Rob Harrison said: “We have held key discussion with Morrisons about their recent tender, their plans for the future, and the need for them to be more supportive of British dairy, as they are of other agricultural sectors.
"We will continue to hold talks regularly to lobby for a more transparent relationship with farmers. We know that retailers are operating in a competitive environment, but they must support the long-term sustainability of the industry."
It was discussed that Morrisons are looking at how best to support farmers and we have challenged them to ensure this happens quickly and in a way that can be expanded if successful.
The NFU has already met with Tesco and Musgraves (Budgens and Londis)this year and will shortly be meeting with Aldi, Co-Op and other national retailers.
