The NFU has been working with the FFA and the TFA over recent months and recently held two farmer meetings in Market Drayton and Sedgemoor. These were to show dairy farmers that we are united in our actions and agreed in what needs to change.
This includes:
- Encouraging best practice at retail and processor level – including naming and shaming those that don’t step up to the plate
- Increased communication between milk buyers and farmers and vice versa – we are in this market situation together
- Harnessing consumer support through better labelling of British dairy products and increased use of the Red Tractor logo
- Calling for EU wide measures to support dairy farmers including extension of private storage aid and a review of intervention price.
Following these meetings, NFU President Meurig Raymond and dairy board chairman Rob Harrison have this week written to all dairy members in England to share with them what the NFU is doing to support dairy farmers through this difficult period, and to highlight Dairy Board contact points.
NFU Cymru President Stephen James and NFU Cymru Dairy Board Chairman, Aled Jones, have also written to all dairy members in Wales on the same basis.
