Sercombe elected chair of Copa Sheep Working Group
The chairman of the NFU livestock board stood unopposed and was unanimously voted in during a meeting in Brussels.
Mr Sercombe said: “I’m delighted to have been appointed as Copa Cogeca Chairman of the working party on sheep and goats. There are many challenges facing the sector not least current low prices experienced by many Member States and how we address market volatility.
“Over the next two years I hope to work with all stakeholders to promote consumption of lamb and goat meat across the EU, so I welcome the EU funding to promote lamb – let’s hope the campaign ‘tasty, easy, fun’ resonates with European consumers. Developing export opportunities for sheep meat is important as we look to improve returns for producers. We will also aim to improve transparency within the supply chain, ensure we remove some of the bureaucracy and red tape from sheep keepers and minimise the threat from disease.”
