In it, the government makes a number of announcements:
- Among its many statements of upcoming government policy actions is a promise to update the 2017 Clean Growth Strategy into a ‘comprehensive’ Net Zero Strategy in the run up to next year’s COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.
- An enhanced UK Nationally Determined Contribution (a detailed climate action plan) will be published 'well ahead' of COP26.
- In a significant reversal of previous inter-departmental government caution about the prospects for sustainable biomass resources, the report recognises that bioenergy will play a key role in attaining net zero, especially when coupled with carbon capture and storage to create greenhouse gas removals or ‘negative emissions’, and a new Bioenergy Strategy is promised by 2022.
- A call for evidence on ‘negative emissions’ technologies will also be launched later this year, to focus on carbon pricing, design and governance.
