This week NFU President Tom Bradshaw gives us his take on the Spring Statement, and updates on our joint campaign with environmental NGOs to secure investment in the agricultural and environmental budget within Defra.

NFU Vice President Rachel Hallos gives two reasons to be cheerful with regard to our work on water quality and rural crime; and NFU Deputy President David Exwood talks about meeting with the other three UK farming unions looking at farm safety.

Monday 31 March

  • NFU President Tom Bradshaw will appear on Ready Meals: What They Really Mean For You on BBC One at 9pm.

Tuesday 1 April

  • NFU President Tom Bradshaw is hosting a biosecurity press-briefing roundtable alongside former FSA Chair and Minister for Food, Farming and Fisheries Lord Rooker. NFU Horticulture Board chair Martin Emmett, NFU senior veterinary adviser Claire White and NPA (National Pig Association) chair Rob Mutimer will also be in attendance.
  • NFU Deputy President David Exwood is speaking at the NFU South Board meeting.
  • A members’ negotiation skills workshop is taking place at NFU HQ in Stoneleigh. It is being run by two former senior supermarket buyers.
  • NFU chief poultry adviser Aimee Mahony is attending an EPIC (Egg and Poultry Industry Conference) committee meeting to plan the conference taking place in November.
  • The Efra Select Committee will hear oral evidence on the future of farming and fairness in the food supply chain from Minister for Food Security and Rural Affairs Daniel Zeichner MP, Defra Director of the Farming and Countryside Programme Janet Hughes and the Defra Director General for Food, Biosecurity and Trade Emily Miles.

  • NFU Deputy President David Exwood is attending a member roundtable near Tavistock.
  • NFU Vice President Rachel Hallos is speaking at the NFU East board meeting.

  • NFU Deputy President David Exwood is attending a Dartmoor Forum meeting in Tavistock alongside Food Security and Rural Affairs Minister Daniel Zeichner MP.
  • NFU Vice President Rachel Hallos is speaking at the NFU Midlands Board meeting alongside NFU head of external affairs Olivia Phoenix.
  • NFU sustainable supply chains chief adviser Alex Stevens is speaking at the Danish embassy.
  • NFU chief poultry adviser Aimee Mahony is attending a GB Avian Core Group meeting.
  • NFU representatives are attending a UK Soy Manifesto signatory meeting.
  • Adam Dance MP (Liberal Democrat, Yeovil) is on farm with the NFU.

Friday 4 April

  • ABP UK is hosting MPs on the NFU Food and Farming Fellowship Scheme on their Shropshire innovation farm. This will be the Fellowship’s 3rd visit on the scheme.
  • Anna Sabine MP (Liberal Democrat, Frome and East Somerset) and Markus Campbell-Savours MP (Labour, Penrith and Solway) are on farm with the NFU.
