Interest in the above inquiry is due to the impact waste management has on the agricultural sector. The waste management process can be challenging for many of our members in rural communities, who have a lack of disposal options available due to limited infrastructure and collection services.
Key points within the NFU response include:
- Improving the availability of facilities and minimising costs for recycling or disposal of waste
- Prevention of food waste needs to be the producers primary aim, where this is not possible the waste hierarchy must be followed.
- Utilisation of waste food and biowaste via anaerobic digestion has multiple environmental and economic benefits to the agricultural industry.
