The NFU has responded to Red Tractor’s consultation on Lifetime Assurance for Beef.
“We were under no illusions that this would be a divisive issue for members, and I like to think that this has been reflected in our response. Every concern that was raised, from both sides of the debate, has been included as part of our response and is there for our members to read.
In addition, those who submitted personal responses to the consultation to us have had their views submitted to Red Tractor as individual responses.
There has been criticism of the consultation from both sides during the last three months, but I can categorically state that the NFU has consulted as widely as possible with our members, and have put together a comprehensive document. The livestock board took note of members comments and following careful consideration have expressed their concerns, along with potential solutions to deliver our longterm goal which is to deliver lifetime assurance for beef.
At our last meeting, the board came to the conclusion that the divergence of opinions in industry means that it would be difficult to deliver the move to lifetime assurance under the proposed models”.
