Thursday 19 December was pronounced a day of national solidarity for farming and saw the NFU, in collaboration with farming unions NFU Cymru, NFU Scotland and the Ulster Farmers’ Union display banners up and down the country.
Designed to be highly visible in key political constituencies, the aim is to focus public attention and build political pressure on the devastating impact these changes would have on farming families and rural communities.
To support the campaign, car stickers will also be available to boost visibility even further, allowing supporters to spread awareness wherever they travel and reinforce the call for action among the wider public.

“This is a fight we will not abandon, and we need everyone to stand with us on 19 December and beyond.”
NFU President Tom Bradshaw
As these messages to government begin to populate the UK’s major highways, following our Big Banner Day of action, NFU President Tom Bradshaw said it had been a “powerful visual reminder to government that our fight to protect family farms is far from over”.
He added: “Only a combination of public support and political pressure will lead to a change in this damaging policy.
“The NFU is in a unique position to apply that pressure, bringing together stakeholders from across the country, coordinating efforts across all the home nations and leading a campaign to highlight the importance of protecting British family farms.
“We owe it to our farming families and to future generations to ensure these damaging proposals don’t undermine the future of food production. This is a fight we will not abandon, and we need everyone to stand with us on 19 December and beyond.”
Share the story on social
We will be flooding social media with images of these banners. These photos will help bring our campaign to life and let the public and politicians know this issue is not going away.
Here are some tips on how to get a great photo and promote it on social media:
- Bring the family: We need to demonstrate the human element of this policy.
- Show the setting: Capture the banner in a well-lit, clear setting. If possible, include your farm or animals in the background. Avoid cluttered or messy areas.
- Keep it serious: Convey determination.
- Get creative: Take multiple shots. Try selfies in front of the banner or group shots with friends and family beside it. Unposed photos can also work well.
- Consider video: A short video (under 30 seconds) can be powerful. Mention where you are, your farm’s name, and how the family farm tax impacts you.
- Share your photos: Use #StopTheFamilyFarmTax when posting on social media to help us find and promote your content.
This is only the beginning
This is just the beginning – we want you to display banners throughout the coming months.
In January, NFU members and the public will be able to order more campaign materials – banners and car stickers – through our online shop, due to be launched in the new year.
