NFU Director of Trade and Business Strategy Nick von Westenholz explains why the NFU's export strategy is crucial to the industry.

The NFU's export strategy sets out the building blocks necessary to grow the UK’s agri-food exports over the next decade.

Since leaving the EU, the UK has been able to forge its own, independent trade policy, characterised in particular by negotiating new trade deals with countries like Australia and New Zealand.

In truth, these specific relationships hold only modest potential to grow UK exports, and may create serious competitive challenges in our own domestic marketplace.

Seize the opportunity

So it’s time for the government to really seize the opportunity of our independent trade policy for the benefit of British farming, and turn its attention to more promising overseas markets.

If we get this right it will not only increase the markets UK farmers can sell into abroad, but it will also create greater diversity in demand to improve returns in our home market, improve our competitiveness and drive innovation and productivity for UK farm businesses.

"In truth, these specific relationships hold only modest potential to grow UK exports, and may create serious competitive challenges in our own domestic marketplace."
