The NFU has responded to National Grid’s first non-statutory consultation for the Chesterfield to Willington overhead electricity line.
This project will consist of a new 60 km, 400kv overhead line, and connect to a new 400kv substation in Chesterfield that is being built by the Brinsworth to High Marnham upgrade.
This project will be a nationally significant infrastructure project, and will therefore require a development consent order. Read our deep dive on the project to get the details.
The NFU has submitted a comprehensive response to this consultation on behalf of all members affected.
In our response, issues impacting our members that require attention from National Grid were raised.
The NFU has submitted a response to the stage 1 consultation for the National Grid Chesterfield to Willington project, which forms part of the ‘Great Grid Upgrade’ proposing new overhead cables through Derbyshire.
The response highlights key issues such as the scheme route and the undergrounding of cables.
Other matters also raised within the NFU response include:
alternative tower types
cumulative impact
environmental mitigation and biodiversity net gain
consultation with landowners
impact on agricultural businesses
amount of land taken for the scheme
NFU engagement.
Next steps
National Grid is anticipating a further statutory consultation in 2025, which the NFU expects will outline the proposed route and further details.
For any inquiries or further information, please contact the National Grid’s community relations team by phone: 0800 073 1047 or email: [email protected].
Join a webinar
To facilitate the consultation process, National Grid will be conducting online webinars that will provide localised sessions for each of the six sections.
Each event will be followed by a dedicated question and answer session.
There are also a range of in-person public events which you can attend to find out more about the project.
Once you have submitted your query someone from NFU CallFirst will contact you. If needed, your query will then be passed to the appropriate NFU policy team.
