National Day of Unity – social media tips

08 January 2025

The NFU along with the other UK farming unions is hosting a National Day of Unity on 25 January. This involves a series of events in counties across the UK.

Noise on social media adds to the amplification of our message, bringing the campaign to life and lets the public and politicians know that this issue is not going away.

Here are some tips on how to get a great photo and how to promote it on social media:

Let people know

You can use one of our downloadable graphics and share details for your events in the caption – this will help let the public, other farmers and MPs know where you will be and when.

Remember to also let us know when and where your event will take place so it can be added to the map.

What about a video?

Video is also a great way get across how you feel about the family farm tax and to share details of any events. If you decide you want to do a video remember to keep it short (under 30 seconds), say where you are and what you farm, and share how the family farm tax will impact you.

You can use free platforms such as Canva (photos and graphics) and CapCut (video)to edit and add subtitles, making your videos accessible to all.

Bring the family

Photos and videos with people are more interesting, so try to include them if you can. Think about who you could include in your photo, friends, family and neighbours. Try to get a range of people, younger and older, male and female, just make sure you have their permission before sharing.

Show the setting

Capture the event by photos and videos, try and keep the area clear and stand with the sun behind you to get the best shots.

Keep it serious

We want to convey that we are determined and not going away. Avoid forced smiles or overly cheerful poses. This will help to emphasise the seriousness of the issue.

Get creative

There is no harm in taking more than one photo. Try a selfie, group shot or candid shots. Remember sometimes the best pictures are not posed.

Consent. If you include children in your photos/videos, we will be in touch to ask you to complete a short parental consent form.

What should I do with my photos?

  • If you share them on social media tag your regional account @NFUNorth, @NFUSouth, @NFUMidlands or @NFUEast and also tag the national accounts to maximise exposure (see national accounts below).
  • Not sharing your images on social media? Send them to your county adviser via WhatsApp, they can then pass them on to be posted on NFU social media or email [email protected].

Remember the hashtag. If you are posting on your own accounts, please include the hashtag #StopTheFamilyFarmTax. This will help us to find and promote your content.
