Poultry Sheds

Midlands poultry members are invited to join us at Whittern Farms by kind permission of Jo Hilditch to learn more about the successful broiler business and how they are processing the manure produced on-site using three 600kw chicken litter burners.

Whittern Farms burns all the poultry manure it produces, generating energy to heat the 22 sheds. This is a practice which has come more into the spotlight in recent years, with government bodies, producers and some environmental groups seeing this as a potential solution to managing excess manure. As well as chickens, this family owned business also produces crops including blackcurrants, vineyards and cereals, as well as various other diversifications.

The afternoon will include a tour and overview of the litter burning facility followed by a discussion and then refreshments and an opportunity to socialise with others.

Please note: although we will not be entering the sheds this is a visit to a poultry site, and involves meeting other producers, so please ensure you take sensible precautions in terms of the vehicle used to travel to the event and the clothing you wear.

To book your place(s) please contact the Midlands Hub on 02476 939402 or email: [email protected] (please let us know if you have any dietary requirements)
