NFU in the field – Mon 19 August – Fri 23 August

  • NFU county advisers will host MPs on members' farms. This week, Patrick Hurley MP (Lab, Southport), Claire Young MP (LD, Thornbury and Yate) and Chris Vance MP (Lab, Harlow) will all be on farm. 

NFU working for you – Tues 20 August

  • Chief poultry adviser Aimee Mahony will attend a Defra poultry meat policy stakeholder meeting, representing NFU poultry members and highlighting current challenges facing producers.

NFU in the field – Weds 21 August

  • NFU Deputy President David Exwood, along with representatives from the Uplands North group, Uplands South group and the Uplands Forum will be hosting Farming Minister Daniel Zeichner and programme director of the FFCP (Future Farming and Countryside Programme) Janet Hughes on farm in Lancashire. The purpose of the day is to discuss where policy changes can be made to ensure the uplands are productive and profitable.

  • NFU senior support schemes adviser Richard Wordsworth and NFU senior countryside adviser Claire Robinson will meet with senior RPA officials leading on SFI delivery to discuss the current rollout and issues raised by members. 
  • NFU Horticulture and Potatoes chairman Martin Emmett and NFU senior policy specialist Christine McDowell will meet with members, as part of an industry-wide discussion forum held by the protected edibles sector, to discuss the current border control challenges the sector is facing.

  • NFU rural economy adviser Amy Cobbett will attend the Rural Insights Forum with Defra to discuss the rural economy and the Rural England Prosperity Fund.

  • NFU county advisers will host MPs on members’ farms. This week Caroline Voaden MP (LD, South Devon), Charlotte Nichols MP (Lab, Warrington North) and Rachel Gilmour MP (LD, Tiverton and Minehead) will all be on farm. 

NFU working for you – Tues 13 August

  • NFU Livestock Board chair David Barton along with the livestock and economics teams, will host NatWest on farm. The purpose of this visit will be to discuss how best the livestock sector and banks can work together, particularly in the context of net zero and sustainability. NatWest will send representatives from their commercial mid market team, agriculture team, climate team, carbon trading team and the digital banking team.

  • NFU food business team and the poultry team will meet with Lidl’s agricultural manager to discuss a range of topics affecting the sector such as commitments around stocking rates and sourcing of sustainable soy.

  • NFU Poultry Board chair James Mottershead and chief poultry adviser Aimee Mahony will host a delegation from New Zealand throughout the week who are here to learn about how the UK responded to highly pathogenic avian influenza.

  • NFU President Tom Bradshaw will attend the Defra summer reception to engage with the newly-elected team. 
  • Members from the NFU Commodity Boards are attending a virtual round table with the Low Pay Commission on 31 July discussing the impacts on business of the 2024 minimum wage rate increases and factors to take into account when setting rates for 2025.

  • NFU Horticulture and Potatoes Board Chair Martin Emmett, NFU skills and employment adviser Tom Price and NFU chief crop and plant production adviser Lee Abbey will meet with Sedex to give feedback on Sedex guidance to the new Sedex/SMETA audit 'credible wage' requirements and voice the concerns of members on the changes to the audit.

The annual Farm to Fork Summit was a key ask from the NFU general election manifesto – Farming for Britain's Future – and marks a significant step in the NFU's campaign for recognition of the strategic importance of British food and farming.

  • NFU Next Generation Forum member Eveey Hunter will be in Brussels to meet with CEJA (European Council of Young Farmers) to discuss future European farmer support and policies.

  • NFU chief livestock adviser John Royle will be in Brussels for meetings with European colleagues about the deforestation regulation and for the Copa Cogeca working party on sheep and goats.
