The Commission has been busy gathering views from across the industry, from stakeholders, farmers, and all of those involved in assurance systems across the summer.

The NFU has also been busy listening to the views of our members in order to build our own submission to the review. Using the feedback from the member meetings this spring, our member survey, and work from all of our boards, we have put together a comprehensive response, which has now been submitted to the Commission for consideration.

‘Once in a generation opportunity’
Following the NFU’s submission, NFU President Tom Bradshaw said: “This is a once in a generation opportunity to work to address some of the major concerns in the farming industry about farm assurance. In its submission, the NFU has sought to reflect the wide range of views of our members, and they are very clear that the current system needs to change.
“Our response recognises some of the benefits which farm assurance schemes provide, but importantly, covers the inescapable issues that need to be addressed, whether it’s the perceived lack of value for money that assurance schemes provide, the audit burden on farm, or the need for individual sectors to have a different approach to assurance.
“We have also taken this opportunity to look at new ways of working and have put forward some clear asks including changes to the audit system, ways of utilising technology, rebuilding trust, communications, and introducing more transparency & accountability.
“The NFU looks forward to hearing the outcomes of this farm assurance review and working across the entire supply chain to implement the recommendations of the Commission.”
