Forestry Commission
The Forestry Commission is the Government’s forestry expert responsible for protecting, expanding and promoting sustainable woodland in England. We aim to increase the value of woodlands to society and the environment. Trees have far reaching benefits for individuals, the land, the environment and for future generations. By planting the right tree in the right place for the right reason, we can ensure those benefits are realised.
We provide advice on woodland creation and management, tree health, offer financial support, including our flagship grant the England Woodland Creation Offer (EWCO) and administer felling licences.
The Forestry Commission works with two agencies: Forestry England, which manages the Public Forest Estate, and Forest Research, the principal organisation for forestry and tree related research.
Forestry is a devolved matter, with a range of agencies leading the sector in the devolved administrations. The Forestry Commission leads the sector in England and looks after the English Public Forest Estate through Forestry England. Forest Research continues to operate across the whole of Great Britain
You can talk to us about the variety of funding options available to support the creation and management of new and existing woodlands and get advice on woodland design and management.
You can find out more about the Forestry Commission at: GOV.UK | Forestry Commission
More information about the grants, advice and support we offer can be found on our woodland creation overview page.

We now have over 970 stores across Great Britain, and as we’ve grown, so too have many of the British businesses that we work with.
In 2017, we were proud to sign the NFU's Back British Farming Charter, signalling our commitment to supporting the growth of the British farming sector. This is further reinforced by our commitment to selling 100% fresh everyday British beef, chicken, eggs, pork, milk, cream and butter. We are delighted to offer a wide range of fresh produce to our customers from a variety of growers in Great Britain – currently two thirds of products in our permanent range are from British suppliers.
We are also on track to invest £21 billion in the British food industry by the end of FY24, exceeding our original five-year commitment of £15 billion by 40%. This equates to an additional £6 billion and underscores our ongoing support for British agriculture and food production – giving suppliers the confidence to invest for the future, create new jobs and develop their businesses.’

NFU Mutual
Throughout our 114-year history we have worked closely with the National Farmers Union to support the farming industry and rural communities.
Today our relationship has never been stronger.
Our voluntary financial support for the NFU was £7,332,000 in 2024 – this benefits members of both organisations and supports our shared local network of over 280 agency offices.
As the UK’s leading rural insurer, and as a mutual at the heart of the rural community, we provide specialist cover and risk management services to small farms, large farms, and agricultural contractors. We also move with the times, developing our products and services to help farms capitalise on new farming and diversification opportunities, including the adoption of technology and farm renewables.
We also offer Union Advantage, available to NFU members who commit to insure with us for at least three years. Union Advantage offers discounts of 20% on NFU Mutual Risk Management Services Ltd consultancy and training days, as well as exclusive cover benefits that save money and support farmers in the event of a claim.
As a mutual, we are here to support our members and their communities, but that goes beyond simply paying claims. In 2024, NFU Mutual donated £3.25m to local and national charities in response to the ongoing challenges faced by communities across the country.
This included £1.92m distributed through our Agency Giving Fund, a national fund to support local charities that was first set up in 2020 in response to the pandemic – to provide emergency support and assist with recovery.
NFU Mutual invites all local agency and branch offices to nominate local charities, using their local knowledge, to ensure funding is directed across the UK to where it can make a tangible and meaningful difference.
NFU Mutual also pledged £1m to the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust to support a range of initiatives, including projects that tackle isolation, support mental health and wellbeing, and enrich young lives through agricultural education and innovation. The Farming Community Network, The Royal Countryside Fund, The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) and FareShare have all benefitted from donations in 2024.
In the last three years, we have invested more than £1m in initiatives to tackle rural crime and are proudly a major funder of the National Rural Crime Unit (NRCU).
This unit is staffed by police officers with experience in detecting and preventing rural crime, with investigative powers to track and intercept stolen machinery and equipment. It also shares intelligence across UK police forces and overseas.
Working hand-in hand with the NRCU, we strive to enhance their effectiveness through a dedicated team which shares claims data and insights, helps to identify areas at risk, and finds patterns to assist recoveries. In 2024, NFU Mutual also committed to funding the UK’s first dedicated livestock theft officer within the unit until at least 2027/2028.
NFU Mutual is also proud to support the Farm Safety Foundation (Yellow Wellies) an independent charity (Registered Charity No. 1159000) which aims to raise awareness of, and address the attitudes and behaviours around, risk-taking and poor mental health in the agricultural sector throughout the UK.
