NFU Deputy President David Exwood attended both events.
On the Isle of Wight, David hosted a members’ reception which featured Cowes Milk, freshly sourced from the Bradley family’s vending machine, and gave an update on the NFU’s engagement with the new government.
At the New Forest and Hampshire Show David Exwood he told members that the NFU had “really good early engagement” with the new Labour government but exactly what the change would mean for farming was still uncertain.
Commons agreement ‘absolute priority’
The government had said SFI would continue and David emphasised that it was an “absolute priority” that a bespoke agreement for commons like the New Forest was achieved, to replace the one available under previous schemes.
“It is about keeping livestock numbers up, keeping those grazing animals on the common. We do need enough, and we can’t let the number of livestock on any of the commons or uplands continue to drop.”
